Mixed Music Distribution Network – Réseau pour la Distribution de la Musique Mixte

Mixed music concert with Sampo

The purpose of the project is to interconnect conservatories and music schools and allow them to exchange and create pedagogical mixed music works, as well as the already existing repertoire of mixed music of the 20th and 21st centuries.

To do this, we place terminals – Sampos – at partner schools. On these different terminals it is possible to play and compose mixed music in the same conditions and with the same audio results anywhere.

Mixed music

The project starts with a reflection on mixed music, which brings together an acoustic instrument and an electro acoustic environment. To produce this kind of music, we need scores, but also configurations for the electro acoustic elements inseparable from such a work. While the distribution of scores does not cause any particular difficulties these days, the difficulties concern the performing of this kind of music.

How can we find a device that is both flexible enough and easy enough to use, and can also exchange or send configurations and sound files for this same device, directly to the musician so that he can start working and playing his instrument?

The RéDi-Musix project brings together all the elements necessary for the production of mixed music from its creation and distribution to its archiving. Technically the RéDi-Musix project appears as a service commonly called "cloud" and contains two types of digital service:

  • database - Pieces from the repertoire of mixed music
  • file storage - sound files, configuration files of the device and file access
  • user community - composers/musicians who deposit pieces in the database
  • Sampo terminal - autonomous and universal electroacoustic instrument that allows access to the repertoire on the cloud
  • P-Soft software - Software for musicians who wish to exchange their configurations and deposit pieces in the database for the other musicians

New pieces and repertoire of the music of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries

Two types of pieces were worked on during the project. First, students and teachers were able to work on pre-existing pieces of mixed music that had been specifically transcribed for Sampo. These pieces were available on the server and were distributed directly on the terminals. Musicians playing acoustic instruments were thus able to perform these pieces in identical conditions in all partner schools in France or abroad.

At the beginning of the project, the repertoire contained already some dozens of pieces available for various acoustic instruments and Sampo.

During the project, composers and students in composition classes composed mixed pedagogical pieces. These pieces were immediately placed on the server where they were available for all other partner schools and notably their music classes. Students from all these schools were therefore able to work on these pieces to prepare the restitution concerts.

Partners of the project

We had a total of 8 project partners in France and Portugal.

In France, seven conservatories took part in the project:

In Portugal, our partner was the music school Curso de Música Silva Monteiro for the RéDi-Musix project.

Call for mixed music compositions

for solo acoustic instrument and electronics (sound files and/or live-electronics)

Dear musicians, performers, composers...

We are very happy to announce you that our RéDi-Musix project for distribution of mixed music has entered its second phase. This project supported by the French Ministry of Culture is destined to make access to the repertory of mixed music permanently easier for everyone.

We are now preparing new Sampos which will be distributed in French conservatories, and a database of mixed music compositions. The database and the compositions (configurations and files) will be distributed through the Sampos to be taught and played in our partner conservatories (Paris, Nantes, Saint-Nazaire, Tours, Saint-Étienne, Annecy and Porto in Portugal).

For this purpose we are currently looking for mixed music compositions, especially pedagogical pieces with tape, but all pieces are welcome.

The composition should be for a solo acoustic instrument and tape (preferred) or for solo acoustic instrument and simple live electronics. Once they will be transcribed for Sampo, we will propose the pieces to all our partners to be played on Sampo.

Preferred format of the compositions for the RéDi-Musix project:

  • solo acoustic instrument and sound file(s)
  • pedagogical and short compositions of all levels
  • stereo output

We also welcome:

  • solo acoustic instrument and live electronics (with or without sound files)
  • concert compositions
  • more than 2 outputs (but a stereo version must be possible)

Please send your proposals through the form below:
